The Gift: The Extraordinary Experiences of Ordinary People

The Gift: The Extraordinary Experiences of Ordinary People In the 1930s J.B. Rhine launched a series of experiments focusing on extra sensory perception (ESP) at Duke University's Parapsychology Lab. To both accolades and criticism from the scientific community, he argued that the ability of a statistically significant number of subjects to accurately guess the order of randomly arranged cards established ESP's existence. Rhine's daughter Feather, an experimental and clinical psychologist and director of the Rhine Research Center, with the assistance of Schmicker (Best Evidence), draws on a database of thousands of reported cases to present a variety of intriguing, if not fully convincing, accounts that, she says, can't be explained except as instances of ESP. There are three types of stories: precognitive (the ability to foresee an event), clairvoyant (witnessing an event at a distance as it occurs) and telepathic (reading another's mind). There are harrowing tales of mothers who sense that one of their children is in danger, as well as young children apparently able to sense what a parent is thinking. Feather includes a number of examples of people who claim to have had a premonition of 9/11. Although the author strains for an open-minded approach, she states clearly that she accepts the validity of psychic experiences. This collection of anecdotes will appeal most to those who share her convictions.

The Future of the Body: Explorations Into the Further Evolution Of Human Nature

the future of the bodyEsalen cofounder Murphy has produced a massive tome that could become a bible of the New Age movement. His main thesis is that each of us harbors latent metanormal capacities rooted in biological evolution: ESP, clairvoyance, extraordinary movement abilities, uncanny somatic awareness and self-regulation, superabundant vitality and universal love, among others. Our genetic inheritance, he argues, predisposes us toward developing these powers, which can be mediated by Christian grace, the Tao or the workings of Buddha Mind, and also can be developed through specific practices. These include psychotherapy, fitness training, martial arts, meditation, biofeedback and prayer. Murphy's claims for extraordinary human potential are annotated with references to 3000 sources, ranging from physiological studies of meditators to reports of near-death experiences. In closing he scans the impulse toward wholeness in ancient and modern cultures and warns of the mental imbalance that misuse of transformation discipline can cause. An exciting synthesis.

The Adventure of Self-Discovery: Dimensions of Consciousness and New Perspectives in Psychotherapy a

Adventure Self Discovery: Dimensions of Consciousness and New Perspectives in Psychotherapy and Inner ExplorationHere Grof presents a useful model of the psyche--a model extended by his thirty years of studying non-ordinary states of consciousness. It is useful for understanding such phenomena as shamanism, mysticism, psychedelic states, spontaneous visionary experiences, and psychotic episodes. The model is also useful in explaining the dynamics of experiential psychotherapies and a variety of sociopolitical manifestations such as war and revolution.

This book might have been entitled Beyond Drugs. The second part describes the principles and process of the non-pharmacological technique developed by the author and his wife Christina for self-exploration and for psychotherapy. Grof explores in detail the components of this technique. He describes its method, its effective mechanisms, as well as its goals and potential. Its practice is simple, since it utilizes the natural healing capacity of the psyche.

In the Dark Places of Wisdom

In the Dark Places of WisdomParmenides, the ancient Greek poet who is known as the father of logical thought, has been a decisive influence in shaping the whole course of Western philosophy and is a crucial figure in determining how we understand the ancient world. But there are some disturbing details in his own poetry, together with occasional remarks made by other ancient writers, that have always cast a long shadow of doubt over the standard view of him as a purely rational thinker. Then, in the 1950s, a series of inscriptions was unearthed at Parmenides' hometown in southern Italy which has thrown a totally new light on the nature and purpose of his philosophy. This book brings the key evidence together and presents a new picture of him as priest, initiate and healer.

Dark Night; Early Dawn: Steps to a Deep Ecology of Mind

Dark Night; Early Dawn: Steps to a Deep Ecology of MindCombining philosophical reflections with deep self-exploration to delve into the ancient mystery of death and rebirth, this book emphasizes collective rather than individual transformation. Drawing upon twenty years of experience working with nonordinary states, Bache argues that when the deep psyche is hyper-stimulated using Stanislav Grof's powerful therapeutic methods, the healing that results sometimes extends beyond the individual to the collective unconscious of humanity itself.
